If you are interested in knowing how long you should wear dental braces, the reality is that this is a medium or long-term treatment therefore, it is usually a slow process.
There are people who are already undergoing orthodontic treatment, but their dentist has never told them exactly how long they will be using braces, there are other people who simply have not started their treatment due to the whole braces process. Although the duration of the treatment varies according to each particular case, in this article we will see the stages or phases of the braces’ treatment.
1. Diagnosis and planning
The most important stage of the entire treatment begins before you even start using the devices as such. For this, it is necessary to carry out a particular study of each case with X-rays, photographs, models, etc. Once a diagnosis is made, the orthodontist will be able to give you an approximate time for dental treatment.
2. Work stage
This stage is when the teeth straightening process begins. This is when orthodontic appliances are placed, and straightening begins. The work stage is divided into the following phases:
- Alignment and Leveling: Usually, alignment and leveling of your teeth is proportional to your dental crowding (how close your teeth are) to achieve adequate results. It usually takes 3 to 6 months depending on the particular case.
- Closure of gaps: Once proper alignment and leveling of the teeth is reached, they may become slightly separated. Closing the gaps between your teeth takes less time than leveling, although it depends in each particular case, you can expect it to take between 2 and 4 months.
- Dental settling: During this step, we seek to achieve a healthy bite, since braces are not only for straight teeth. This step usually takes 6 months.
- Ending: Here we seek to maintain the teeth position achieved through the previous steps. This stage also usually lasts around 6 months.
3. Retention stage
This stage is carried out once the braces are removed, in this stage static or removable retainers are usually used to retain the teeth in the same position in which they were left after orthodontia.
So, how long am I going to be wearing braces?
The treatment time depends on each individual case. However, if you require a rough answer; It can be calculated that by adding the average times of each phase, one can expect to be in orthodontics between 1 year and 6 months to 2 years.
